My Edit
Blogger Jentine of My
Edit writes beautifully about her love of
thrifted fashion, her degree in Fashion Design and her
favorite food.
1. Describe your style
in 3 words. Joyful, unique
and onabudget (trying to stick to the three
words).
2. How do you put an outfit
together, any
tips?
The most important thing when getting dressed is to look good.
Have fun and experiment but if a look or trend doesn't work on
your body or colouring or lifestyle, just leave it for off-duty
models.
3. Your hair always looks
gorgeous, what's your favorite way to wear
it?
Thanks for the compliment! I dyed my hair very dark about two
years ago and it took forever (and some orange in between
stages) to get back to a health(ish) blonde. I used to always
straighten my hair and get frustrated with the damage and with
the fact that it would never stay in place. I'm wiser now and I
often split my hair in two and roll and pin it up for a day.
This gives me soft beachy waves the next day with minimum
effort.
4. A lot of your pieces are
thrifted, have you got any secrets to where and how to
find such amazing
stuff?
It's no secret that I go to Talize
a lot. It's huge, clean and is constantly
restocked. I'm good at thrifting but Talize is also good
to me. I can't believe the stuff I find. I also visit any
tiny thrift stores I pass by. Sometimes those places are
goldmines because the staff is not aware good brands
(they mark up mall brands like Guess and Abercrombie but
leave something like Sonia Rykiel for $2... true and
happy story). My biggest tip is to be open minded and
actually LOOK! A rack may be full of polyester mumus but
you may find some silk goodness hidden away between it
all. If you are squeamish, take some hand sanitizer... If
you can't bring yourself to thrift, don't worry. Please
continue to donate your gently used items. I would be
very comfortable with a thrifting
monopoly.
5. What is your favorite
food/meal?
This is really hard to answer. I just really like food. But my
mom does make this fisherman's pie with salmon and broccoli,
that is delicious, nutricious and my mom makes it, so that
means I only have it with the good company of my
family.
6. Most
inspirational and stylish movie you've ever
seen?
I really don't watch a lot of movies... but I remember watching
Clueless back in the day and desperately wanting some knee
highs and an 'as if!' t-shirt...
7. Imagine you needed to start
your wardrobe from scratch, what would be the first 5-10
things you would
buy?
I hope I never have to go back and start my wardrobe again, I'm
a little emotionally attached to some of my things. But if I
had to start over, I would begin with some good basics (yes,
very exciting I know...). Some nice tight black jeans (to dress
down or up), a blue plaid shirt (b/c I wear mine sooo much),
brown boots (same thing... very versatile), some cowhide,
leopard booties (as spice), a black well-fitting, conservative
but unique dress (if I need to get a job, especially since I
will clearly need to rebuild my wardrobe), a khaki, high
waisted skirt (just because), a brown leather belt (part of the
blogger uniform) and a black leather bomber (ditto). And then
you better believe that I would tear my couch apart for spare
change and get myself over to a thrift
store.
8. What's your favorite outfit
you've ever
worn?
Lots... I can honestly say, I love my closet. But if I had to
pick something, I would pick
my floor length sequin
skirt... I felt very
special (if slightly constricted) all day. There is a
wedding coming up, I think it deserves a
repeat...
9. Describe your perfect
day.
Sleep in with Matt and the herd of cats. Catch up on my
favourite blogs. Spend a bit of time alone at Talize. Go to the
beach with a big stack of magazines. Do my gardens. Host a bbq
in the backyard for family and friends. Spend some time with
the mirror and get all dressed up to dance. Dance.... kinda
cheesy. I think the best right now would be to have a day off
and not stress out about dresses. I have some deadlines coming
up and I spend a lot of time feeling guilty if I'm not working
on them every free moment.
10. You have a degree in Fashion
Design, how has this influenced your style and the way
you think about clothes?
Having a degree means having an excuse to shop and dress how I
wish. Shopping is research and if anyone publicly questions my
style, they will go down because I have a degree. Haha, I kid.
Honestly, I still have no idea what I want to do exactly but
Fashion Design did give me an appreciation for the work that
goes into original clothing. But it also taught me about the
lack of work as well. The industry is not so glamourous and a
lot of 'fashion design' jobs are based on knocking off
designers. This may not be a shock to you but I really had no
clue how little design was often done. Hence, for now I am
pretty content working outside landscaping as opposed to behind
a computer.
Going to school for Fashion
Design gave me the roots for my love of fashion. My own style
and understanding has grown so much since University but the
basis for my fashion obsession was started in
University.
