Modfox Vintage
Michelle of Modfox Vintage chatted with us about her
passion for 60s style, her love of Edie Sedgwick and her secrets to looking stylish.
1. How would you describe your style?
My style is heavily influenced by 1960s pop, mod and folk, combined with some current trends. I like to call it
"Modern Vintage". It's mostly a combination of bad-ass and romantic like matching leather and lace and velvet and
metal.
2. Where does your passion for 60's style originate from?
I think I've always had a fondness for the 60s and the culture. The music, the art, the freedom. I wish I could
have seen it all for myself. Andy Warhol and his factory fueled my passion. Andy is my favorite person of all time.
His art and life simply fascinates me. He is the influence in my photography and the reason I am so into Art
history (I'm an art history major in school). His books are like my Bibles. Andy means everything to me.
3. What's your favorite outfit you've ever worn?
I have this amazing white lace dress from the 60s that I wore with my leather jacket. I accessorized with strands
and strands of different necklaces and rings. Sometimes I pair the dress and jacket with black tights and my
suede, t-straps pumps (see here). I also love this look
(again bad-ass and romantic).
4. Which sixties style icon do you most admire?
Edie Sedgwick is my favorite "It" girl. She was Andy Warhol's muse and friend. Her style was completely high class
trash mod. She pretty much created the mini skirt and wore black tights as pants. My favorite earrings are my gold
butterfly earrings which are exact replicas of her giant shoulder-sweeper earrings. I think her best feature was
her eyes. Also like Edie, I have huge eyes and love to play them up with mascara and eyeliner. Edie's style never
fails to amaze me.
5. What is your favorite fashionable movie?
Breakfast at Tiffany's. I am not crazy about the movie but, I love Audrey's down the back pearls, her pink party
dress with matching coat, and that orange coat over the light green dress. I can't help myself.
6. Describe your perfect day...
My perfect day involves waking up in San Francisco, heading over to SFMOMA and sitting in a room full of Warhols.
Then watching the California sunset on a rooftop with my best friend. Living in a nothing moment.
7. How do you put together an outfit?
I have way too many clothes. More than I could ever know what to do with. I will not wear the same outfit twice,
unless I'm crazy about it. So I'm constantly trying to create new ways of wearing pieces. I search through 60s
photos and lookbook for inspiration.
8. What are your beauty/makeup must-haves?
Lots and lots of LashBlast mascara, Dark brown eyeliner to make my "wings", and Herbal Essences Long Term
Relationship products to keep my hair healthy and long.
9. Tell us 3 random things about yourself...
- I'm a vegetarian.
- I'm a natural blonde.
- And I'm Brazilian. (My mother is from Recife)
10. What do you think are the top 3 secrets to looking stylish?
♥ 1. Stand tall. No matter what you are wearing, be it grey sweat pants, or a Halston gown, ALWAYS keep good
posture. It makes a huge difference. Because sometimes it's not what you are wearing, it's showing that you have
the confidence to wear ANYTHING.
♥ 2. Thrift stores. If you want to separate yourself from the everyday t-shirt and jeans mob, check out your
local goodwill or rummage sales. If you go often enough and really search you will find treasure. I found a vintage
60s shift dress at goodwill that is in incredible condition and fits like a glove. And who doesn't love cheap
vintage?
♥ 3. Having a niche. I think when you are interested in something, exploring it visually creates a unique
fashion all your own.
My sister dresses like a 1920s flapper everyday and you instantly know, that's HER thing. Having distinct features
or outfits will help outwardly define your interests. If it's just wearing an armful of silver bangles or dressing
like a hippie, go for what interests you and real style will always follow.
