How to Wear Fashion
Socks
Dare to Rock the
Sock?
Alexandra of They
Say Bonjour explores the fashionable ways to
wear socks with heels, boots and shoes...
So, if you heard the phrase
‘heels and socks’, do you reel in shock or smile with
delight? What was once the ultimate fashion faux pas,
socks with heels becoming accepted as right on trend. This
is a look that can go to either extreme, Britney school
girl disaster or fabulously fashion forward (check out her
awesome pairing on the right).
This started off as a bit of a geek chic look with quirky
fashionista Alexa Chung regularly seen donning a pair of socks
with her heels but this trend has been adopted by the big names
of the catwalk, Burberry, Prada and Christian Dior to name a
few.
Socks are often forgotten about as a fashion accessory, but
the simple act of adding a pair of socks to your heels can
instantly update your whole outfit. Not only can it add a
different layer of colour and dimension to your footwear, it’s
comfy too! In the colder times of the year they can also
replace or add to a pair of tights with heels. There are many
different combinations to try and easily changed to suit
your mood and occasion.
How to Wear Socks with
Heels
It is extremely important to get this mix right, keeping it
fun and casual. By ‘scrunching’ the socks down instead of
folding or rolling it helps to keep the look laid back and not
‘trying too hard.’ Try and steer clear of socks that are too
bulky as you may end up looking like a hiking tourist. Keep the
sock quite thin so it doesn’t cut any length off your legs and
make you look shorter.
Another key tip is if your shoes are patterned; keep the
socks plain and vice versa. You don’t want this look to go too
over the top. Shoes that are too fancy can also begin to
confuse aesthetic, choosing chunkier heels will keep to the fun
and casual philosophy..
If this sounds a bit daunting but you would still like to
give it a try, the easiest way to wear this trend is to match
your sock colour to your shoe. However if you’re feeling a bit
braver you can go in many different directions with this
trend.
Feeling the need for some inspiration? The
Telegraph have just
done an article on their website about this very subject! Don’t
think this is something that only Amazonian catwalk models and
fashion icon celebs can pull off! So go and experiment, see
what works for you. You never know you may be surprised...
